Webflow and Wix Speed Optimization: What You Can and Cannot Control

Hosted website builders handle the servers for you, but plenty of speed is still in your hands. What to optimize in Webflow and Wix, and what to leave alone.

With a hosted website builder, you trade control for convenience. You cannot change the server, the core platform JavaScript or how pages are built behind the scenes. That leads many owners to assume speed is out of their hands. It is not. On most Webflow and Wix sites, the biggest slowdowns are things the site owner added.

What you cannot control

  • Hosting, server response time and the CDN. Both platforms run on fast global infrastructure, which is a strength.
  • The platform's own runtime JavaScript and how it is loaded.
  • The HTML structure the builder generates for each element.
  • Low-level settings such as caching headers and compression.

Accept these and focus on the parts you do control. They usually account for most of the difference between a slow site and a fast one.

What you can control on both platforms

Images

  • Upload images at a sensible size, no larger than about twice the width they are displayed at.
  • Prefer WebP or AVIF uploads where supported, and compress before uploading.
  • Make sure the hero image is set to load immediately, not lazily. Lazy-load everything below it.
  • Avoid using large images as section backgrounds when a solid color or gradient would do.

Video and animation

  • Background videos are one of the heaviest things you can add. Use a short, compressed loop, or a still image on mobile.
  • Lottie and scroll-triggered animations add JavaScript and main-thread work. Keep them to a few purposeful moments.
  • Avoid animating elements in the first screen on load, which delays when visitors see the content.

Fonts

  • Limit yourself to two font families and only the weights you use.
  • Every extra weight or italic is another file to download before text looks right.

Third-party code and apps

Chat widgets, review apps, booking tools, pixels and embedded social feeds are the most common cause of slow builder sites. Remove anything unused, and load what remains in the footer or after the page has loaded rather than in the head.

Webflow-specific tips

  • Clean up unused classes, interactions and assets regularly using the style manager and asset panel.
  • Check the minification options in your site settings, then test that nothing breaks.
  • Set the loading option on each image element: eager for the hero, lazy elsewhere.
  • Place custom code in the footer section unless it truly must run before the page renders.
  • Keep CMS collection lists paginated rather than loading hundreds of items on one page.

Wix-specific tips

  • Check your site speed dashboard in the Wix dashboard, which shows Core Web Vitals from real visitors.
  • Review installed apps and remove any you no longer use. Each one can add its own scripts.
  • Keep the first screen simple: avoid stacking slideshows, galleries and video strips above the fold.
  • Load custom code at the end of the body when the tool allows it.

Measure the right page

Builders often make the home page look fast while a long landing page with every widget is what ad traffic sees. Test the pages that bring in customers.

Adding LightLoader to a hosted builder

Both platforms let you add a custom script to the site head on supported plans. LightLoader prioritizes your hero content, delays non-critical third-party code and reserves space for images, which covers much of what the builder does not let you configure directly.
